Be spontaneous. Be seamless. Be future-ready.

On our next generation network.

What is 5G?

5G is the newest, fastest generation of mobile networking.

Lagging and lost connections will be a thing of the past, and superfast, stable downloads, streaming and connectivity will be available - even when you’re in busy locations.

5G allows you to enjoy vastly improved, seamless performance, whether you’re watching a film or joining a video conference. It’s changing the world around us - and it’ll help us to live better through 5G enabled healthcare, smart buildings, and smart cities.

5G is a game changer, and it’s here to stay.

Faster speeds

Faster, seamless mobile speeds. Play online multiplayer games on the go, and download movies in seconds.

Greater network capacity

Reliable, seamless data and calls in busy places, such as festivals, stations and football matches.

No lagging

The new 5G network can handle day-to-day demands. Watch, stream, call and play without interruptions.

Where is 5G available?

We are rolling out 5G to dozens of locations across the UK and the EU and we aim to expand our 5G network as quickly as possible without compromising on quality. Our eventual aim is to cover as much of the UK as possible and selected European destinations.

5G will be expanding across the UK as the technology is implemented, but for now it is available in select areas of large towns and cities – check if 5G is available in your area with our Network Status Checker.

How fast is 5G?

5G is around 10 times faster than 4G. It will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds will reach above 1Gbps. This means you’ll be able to download a full HD film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G).

  • Where 5G will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, 4G works at average speeds of 23-35Mbps.
  • Where 5G by default will reach peak speeds higher than 1Gbps, basic 4G works at a maximum speed of 150Mbps, while 4G EVO (a later, faster version of 4G) can reach up to 800 Mbps depending on device capability and the number of carriers deployed.

5G speeds can vary, and depend on multiple factors, such as how far away you are from a mast, which spectrum is being used, and how many people around you are using 5G.

5G vs 4G

5G networks easily outperform 4G networks – data lagging on your commute will be a thing of the past, and you’ll be able to stream quickly and easily, even in crowded places. 5G also benefits your smart devices - all of your devices will have instant access to the internet, so they can exchange information in real time.

Can I get 5G?

You’ll need a 5G phone or tablet and a 5G-ready data plan to connect to the Vodafone 5G network. All SIM cards are 5G-ready, which means you won’t need a special SIM to get the most out of our growing 5G network. You’ll also need to be in an area that has 5G coverage.

If you're using a 5G device in an area that doesn't have 5G coverage, your phone or tablet will automatically swap to the signal that's available. Your 5G device will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you're back in a 5G area.

Is 5G safe?

Yes - 5G is safe to use, and we have a commitment to safety and our customers. Thanks to years of detailed scientific research, Government legislation and international guidelines, we’re fully compliant with all national and international electromagnetic frequency regulations.

More information on 5G

5G is the fifth generation of mobile networks and is based on OFDM technology, a way of encoding digital data on multiple carrier frequencies. It’s designed to meet the increased growth of data and connectivity, allowing us to handle a huge amount of data and send it from one place to another much more quickly than previous technologies can.

In addition to faster speed connections and increased capacity, 5G provides a much faster response time (which is normally called ‘latency’), reaching lower than 2ms latency - this is 15 times less than previous technologies.

You’ll need a 5G-enabled phone to connect to the 5G network. You’ll also need a 5G plan, and be in an area with 5G coverage. You can check this using the Network Status Checker.

If you are using 5G and you move into an area that only has a 4G signal, your phone will automatically swap to that instead. It will switch back to 5G as soon as a 5G signal is available.

It depends on the data allowance you have. Our data allowances don’t change if you’re using 4G or 5G – so as long as you keep within your data allowance, you shouldn’t run out. However, you should remember that although 5G is much faster, you’ll still be using the same amount of data – so download films, TV shows and music as you normally would.

Because 5G works at faster speeds, you can download and stream movies and songs much more quickly. Downloading the same file on 4G and 5G will use the same amount of data, but with 5G it will take less time, which could lead to you downloading more. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered with our Unlimited 5G plans.

Vodafone 5G will cost the same as 4G, because we don’t think you should have to pay extra for a better experience.

Although some underground stations have WiFi connectivity, 4G and 5G are currently not available across the whole Tube network. However, there are plans to overhaul the underground’s infrastructure and start to include coverage in between stations and in tunnels.

You can use our Network Status Checker to see if we offer 5G coverage in your area. If we don’t offer it yet, please be patient - we’re rolling out 5G across the UK as quickly and efficiently as we can.

The GigaCube allows you to transform our 5G network into WiFi. If you have unreliable or slow internet at home, or you live in an area not covered by our own super-fast broadband, our GigaCube could help. It’s a wireless router that transforms our 5G and 4G networks into WiFi, so you can stay online easily at home.
